ION EXCHANGE RESIN TESTS DESCRIPTION
BACKWASH:
This test is performed according to MECO Method 2001 and is part of the
resin pretreatment to classify the resin and to observe the effluent
for debris and/or suspended solid content of the resin sample.
MOISTURE HOLDING CAPACITY, MHC:
Also referred to as water retention capacity, WRC: This
test is performed according to MECO Method 2002 and it covers the
determination of the amount of water retained by ion-exchange resins.
The water retention capacity, expressed as percent moisture, of the
resin is proportional to its pore volume. Increases in water retention
capacity of used material as compared with the values for new material
serve as an indicator of polymer decrosslinking; decreases may indicate
either loss of functionality or fouling of the resin. The numeric value
is directly dependent on the ionic form of the resin and will be noted
as to what ionic form the resin is in for comparison to new resins. The
resin will be considered having high capacity if the moisture is
greater than 3% of the typical range indicated for new resin.
EXCHANGE CAPACITY:
This test is performed according to MECO Method 3000 and covers the
determination of the available sites the resin has for ion exchange
purposes. The resin’s capacity is expressed as milliequivalents per
milliliters (volume capacity) of resin or milliequivalents per gram
(weight capacity) of resin and is compared to new resin’s typical
values. There are two types of capacity we report, TEC (Total Exchange
Capacity) and SEC (Salt Splitting Capacity). For strong acid cations,
they are the same.
TOTAL ION EXCHANGE CAPACITY (TEC):
The total capacity is a measure of the total number of ionizable
groups. For strong base anions, the TEC determines the sum of the
exchangeable strong and weak bases anions. For weak base anions, the
wet volume capacity determines the total number of milliequivalents of
exchangeable hydroxide. For strong acid cations, the TEC determines the
total number of milliequivalents of exchangeable hydrogen.
SALT SPLITTING CAPACITY (SEC):
Reported for anion resins only, the SEC is a measurement of the exchangeable strong base anion groups only.
ORGANIC FOULING – ANION RESIN:
This test is performed according to MECO Method 5002.1 and covers a
qualitative analysis of organics on anion exchange resin only. This
method covers the color throw of a brine solution after it has filtered
through an anion resin. The color is then compared to a given Varnish
Color Scale.
TOTAL ORGANIC CARBON (TOC) – ANION RESIN:
This test is performed according to MECO Method 5002.2. This method
covers the measurement of the total organic carbon concentration
extracted from the resin via a brine caustic solution. This measurement
is performed by the use of an organic carbon analyzer. Results are
reported in mg/L-resin.
IRON FOULING:
This test is performed according to MECO Method 5001 and covers the
quantitative determination of iron via Atomic Absorption. Results are
expressed in mg/L-resin.
MICROSCOPIC BEAD EXAMINATION:
A sample of the resin is placed under the microscope for determination
of the physical integrity of the resin and contamination of the bead.
Photographs are taken and included in the report.
